Understanding The Symptoms Of FND

By

PCB Radio

Living with Functional Neurological Disorder can feel like your body and brain are no longer working together properly. One of the hardest things for many people is the sheer amount of symptoms that can appear — often changing daily, hourly, or even minute to minute.

For many sufferers, symptoms are very real, frightening, exhausting, and life changing. Yet because many symptoms can appear invisible from the outside, people are often misunderstood, dismissed, or told they are “fine” simply because they do not look visibly ill.

FND affects the functioning of the nervous system. The brain is still structurally there, but the signals between the brain and body are not functioning correctly. This can lead to a huge variety of neurological symptoms.

No two people experience FND in exactly the same way.

Common Symptoms Of FND

Movement Problems

Many people experience problems controlling movement, balance, and coordination.

Symptoms can include:

  • Tremors
  • Muscle spasms
  • Jerking movements
  • Weakness in limbs
  • Problems walking
  • Balance issues
  • Dragging feet
  • Foot drop symptoms
  • Stiffness or tight muscles
  • Sudden collapsing or falls
  • Coordination problems

Some days symptoms may be mild. Other days even standing or walking can become difficult.

Fatigue & Exhaustion

One of the most common and debilitating symptoms is overwhelming exhaustion.

This is not simply “feeling tired.”
Many people with FND describe:

  • Physical exhaustion
  • Mental burnout
  • Heavy limbs
  • Difficulty functioning after activity
  • Needing long recovery periods
  • Sudden crashes in energy

Even small daily tasks can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Cognitive Symptoms (“Brain Fog”)

FND can heavily affect thinking and concentration.

People may struggle with:

  • Memory problems
  • Forgetting words
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Confusion
  • Slow thinking
  • Losing track of conversations
  • Feeling mentally overloaded
  • Difficulty processing information

Many sufferers describe it as feeling disconnected, foggy, or mentally delayed.

Speech & Communication Difficulties

Some people experience:

  • Stuttering
  • Slurred speech
  • Difficulty getting words out
  • Voice weakness
  • Losing speech temporarily
  • Delayed responses

Symptoms can worsen during stress, fatigue, or flare-ups.

Sensory Symptoms

FND can affect how the body experiences sensation.

This may include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Burning sensations
  • Electric shock feelings
  • Altered sensation
  • Limb heaviness
  • Feeling disconnected from body parts

Symptoms can move around the body and may not always stay in one place.

Blackouts & Non-Epileptic Seizures

Some people experience:

  • Blackouts
  • Collapse episodes
  • Dissociation
  • Non-epileptic seizures
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Sudden shaking episodes

These episodes can be frightening both for sufferers and families.

The Emotional Impact

Living with FND does not only affect the body.

Many people struggle with:

  • Anxiety
  • Isolation
  • Frustration
  • Depression
  • Fear about the future
  • Loss of independence
  • Feeling misunderstood
  • Relationship strain

One of the hardest parts is often not knowing how symptoms will be from one day to the next.

The Reality Of FND

Many people with Functional Neurological Disorder spend years searching for answers. Some are passed between specialists, some feel dismissed, and many are left trying to manage symptoms largely alone.

FND is real.
The symptoms are real.
The impact on daily life is real.

Awareness, understanding, support, and proper care are desperately needed.
